On April 18, 2023, five new names were added to the Vietnam wall in remembrance of those who served their country and gave their lives for our freedom.
In 1996 the Charlotte Detachment #756, Marine Corps League purchased and installed a large flagpole in what was then Laishley Park. This portion of the park was subsequently named "Veterans Park" in 2017. In 2019 there was a major renovation to the park and the large flagpole had to be moved to near the gazebo. The had been on a brick pedestal by the flagpole.
On March 13, 2023, the bronze plaque dedicated to all Veterans of Charlotte County, was re-installed by the Marine Corp League. It had been missing and now located. It sits at the entrance of the gazebo where it is mounted on a stand for ease of viewing.
On September 28, 2022, the winds were too strong for our flags in Veterans Park to survive. There were 6 flags in the Ceremonial Plaza of the park, denoting each of the branches of service. They were totally shredded and the remains were twisted in the pole mechanisms. Thanks to the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) for getting the City to use their new bucket truck to cut the fabric and free the mechanisms. Poles were able to be saved. We can proudly say that the project is now completed with all new flags, donated by MOAA and flanked by memorial benches.
